Keratoconus like most diseases has a genetic link. Until recently it has been poorly understood. Researchers recently in Ireland seem to have discovered a gene that is directly related to a keratoconic family. Once the genetic pathway is understood possible medical interventions can be designed and ultimately brought to fruition.
Like many genetic diseases there are likely to be many variants with different families having different variations of genetic defect that will all require individual tweaking. We still have a long way to go, but at least we have a start!
