Understanding double vision

Double vision is when you see two images instead on one. The double-images can be next to, above or below each other.

Double vision is commonly caused by eye muscle imbalance, which can be treated with prism lenses.

However, it can also relate to diabetes, stroke or head injury and require more intensive intervention.

Our double vision treatment in Sydney

The Eye Practice in Sydney can test for the cause of your double vision and provide advanced ocular treatment with prism lenses.

Testing usually involves checking your peripheral vision to ensure the visual pathway is functioning well. If a muscle imbalance is detected we prescribe prism lenses. These can be fitted to your existing glasses, or a new set of frames.

How prism lenses work

Prism lenses work by refracting, or bending light that enters your eye; realigning the images and correcting double vision.

The degree to which the light is refracted depends on the shape of the prism lens, which is usually thinner in the middle.

It’s worth noting that in most cases glasses with prism lenses look the same as regular spectacles.

Double Vision FAQs

Double vision is commonly caused by an imbalance in one or more of the six muscles controlling the eye. This can be corrected with prism lenses. However, double vision can also be caused by cataracts, astigmatism and other cornea problems, or nerve damage.

You should be tested for double vision if you ever see more than one image when looking at an object.

Prism lenses are roughly the same price as regular spectacle lenses.

Prism lenses usually take 10 working days to grind and fit to your frames.

Prism lenses should immediately correct your double vision. Although it may take some time to get used to them.
